[Chiang, T. (2023, May 4). Will A.I. become the new McKinsey? *The New Yorker.*](https://www.newyorker.com/science/annals-of-artificial-intelligence/will-ai-become-the-new-mckinsey)
> *Today, we find ourselves in a situation in which technology has become conflated with capitalism, which has in turn become conflated with the very notion of progress. If you try to criticize capitalism, you are accused of opposing both technology and progress. But what does progress even mean, if it doesnt include better lives for people who work? What is the point of greater efficiency, if the money being saved isnt going anywhere except into shareholders bank accounts?*
[Longtermism. (2023, April 30). In *Wikipedia.*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Longtermism&oldid=1152442229)
> *Longtermism is an ethical stance which gives priority to improving the long-term future. It is an important concept in effective altruism and serves as a primary motivation for efforts that claim to reduce existential risks to humanity.*
[Robinson, N. J. (2023, May 7). Why effective altruism and 'longtermism' are toxic ideologies [Interview]. *Current Affairs.*](https://www.currentaffairs.org/2023/05/why-effective-altruism-and-longtermism-are-toxic-ideologies)
> *It becomes an excuse for not caring about contemporary problems, and a moral justification for spending all your time just researching how to simulate human consciousness because once you can run simulations of human beings on the computer, you can just maximize the number of them that you make, your little fake people. And as long as youre running them, youre dwarfing any of the moral catastrophes that your actions are unleashing.*

## Recent academic and professional progress
My independent research project from the New Jersey Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (NJLEND) graduate fellowship program is now publicly available on [Codeberg](https://codeberg.org/ethan/NJLEND) and [GitHub](https://github.com/ethyoo/NJLEND).
I'm in the last month of my second semester at Rutgers University School of Communication and Information, where I am completing the Master of Information (MI) degree program.
The fall 2023 semester started a few weeks ago! I'm taking four 3-credit courses while continuing to work as an intern (now part-time) at the Administration for Children and Families (ACF). I'll also be participating in two graduate fellowship programs as an [Eagleton Fellow](https://eagleton.rutgers.edu/grad-fellowships/) (Eagleton Institute of Politics) and Second-Year [NJLEND](https://boggscenter.rwjms.rutgers.edu/student-experiences/njlend) Fellow (The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities).
I started working as a Data Science Graduate Specialist for Rutgers University Libraries this semester, a role in which I am developing and teaching weekly, open workshops in "Data Science Basics" for individuals who want to improve their data management and visualization skills. In March, I also started working on a pilot study with a professor from the Department of Library and Information Science.
My temporary research assistant position with the Center for Research on Ending Violence (REV), Rutgers School of Social Work, will end on September 30. I'll be returning to work with a professor in the Department of Library and Information Science in October.
{{< embed-pdf url="/NJLEND project poster (Yoo, 2023).pdf" hidePaginator="true" >}}
I was also invited to attend the [Princeton Prospective PhD Preview](https://graddiversity.princeton.edu/prospective-phd-preview-p3) (P3) program, which will take place in October and "focuses on engaging scholars from diverse academic, research and non-traditional backgrounds around the path to the Ph.D."
## In my free time
My summer plans are nearly finalized.
I'm continuing to work on a list of PhD programs to which I will apply in 2024. In addition to PhD programs in sociology, I'm also considering programs in human development and public health. I'd like to conduct mixed methods research and social policy analysis related to disabilities, health disparities, and poverty.
I also plan to take the GRE in the next few months.
I'm adjusting to a new schedule!
